Caterpillar Marine announces first European IMO Tier III tugboat
Caterpillar Marine has announced that UZMAR Workboat and Tug Factory will be building an 80 TBP, Robert Allan designed, IMO Tier III certified tugboat powered with the new generation Cat® 3516E 2525bkW engines, and Cat C7.1 118ekW generators with Selective Catalytic Reactor (SCR) systems to fulfill IMO Tier III certification requirements. This is not only the first IMO Tier III in Turkey but also in Europe, the company said in its press release.
UZMAR is collaborating with Cat dealer BORUSAN MAKİNA & GÜÇ SİSTEMLERİ of Turkey. In the new constructed tugboats at UZMAR, legendary 3500 series is the most selected engine model and in accordance with the new emission rules, UZMAR will be the pioneer for 3500E series in Turkey.
The owner of the tugboat is going to be SAAM SMIT Canada Inc. (SST Canada), a joint venture partnership between Boskalis of the Netherlands and SAAM S.A of Chile. The new tug will be constructed at UZMAR Kocaeli Free Zone facility and operated by the owner in Canada.
“The new 3500E engines with SCR systems have many benefits to shipyards like UZMAR as well as to end-users,” said said Mr. İlker Özgür DOĞRUÖZ, head of Marine Segment, BORUSAN. “The integrated solutions of both systems by Caterpillar is the primary advantage of purchasing all related equipment from one responsible party. Because the solutions come IMO Certified from the factory they require no on-site emissions testing, and finally Caterpillar’s world class aftermarket product support will ensure continued success,” said DOĞRUÖZ.
“Preservation of environment sustainably requires an extensive study of all parties in the Maritime Industry,” said Mr. Noyan Altug, UZMAR Workboat and Tug Factory. “Continuous development efforts, careful detailed engineering and collaboration between shipyard and equipment manufacturer is critical for the implementation of environmental friendly solutions at every stage. We are very excited to see the results of our collaboration and expertise with this project,“ said Altug.
UZMAR and BORUSAN have enjoyed a long-standing relationship. Over the last 20 years, they have delivered together more than 80 vessels, equipped with Cat engines and generators to both local and global customers.
