Philippine ro-ro project to connect ‘Nautical Highway’
A new port project had been given the green light by President Arroyo to help the Bicol region recuperate from its devastation wrought by the recent typhoons, a private developer said here Monday.
J.C. Arjona Builders Co. Inc., a local port developer, hailed the release of a P50-million fund by Mrs. Arroyo for the construction of an access road to the proposed private commercial roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) terminal in Barangay San Antonio (Sapa), Pilar, Sorsogon.
Jose C. Arjona, vice-president for administration of J.C. Arjona Builders Co. Inc., said that the port development project had been approved by the President under Executive Order 170 dated January 23, 2003.
Arjona revealed that his project was awarded the right to construct the ro-ro terminal in Pilar, Sorsogon, under the President’s “Strong Republic Nautical Highway Routes.”
Once completed, the ro-ro terminal will link inter-island shipping from the Visayas and Mindanao to Luzon. It will not only reduce the cost of sea transportation but will also provide safe and efficient transport of people and commerce throughout the archipelago, the proponent said.
The establishment of the ro-ro terminal in Pilar, Sorsogon, would benefit Bicolanos who were battered by Typhoons Milenyo and Reming as cheap agricultural products from Visayas and Mindanao would easily be transported to Bicol.
The port developer is set to construct the private subsidiary terminal park to be known as the Pilar Bay Express-Freeway Terminal in Barangay San Antonio (Sapa) in Pilar.
