Shipments of Arctic LNG and Yamal LNG products will be assisted by diesel and gas powered icebreakers, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Vladimir Arutyunyan, Head of FSUE Atomflot’s Fleet Operations Department, Support of the Largest National Projects in the Arctic, as saying at the “Arctic Projects – Today and Tomorrow” conference held in Arkhangelsk.
He said that apart from Arktika icebreaker which is to be completed this year the fleet of icebreakers will be expanded with four more ships two of which are under construction. The decision on construction of the other two icebreakers has not been made yet.
According to Vladimir Arutyunyan, Arctic LNG and Yamal LNG projects will revive shipping considerably.
“Last year, there were 3-4 calls per month with 20 and more calls expected this year. That means a 4-5-fold increase”, he said.
The 22220-series flagship, the Arktika, ordered by Rosatom Corporation and laid down at Baltiysky Zavod – Sudostroyeniye shipyard on 5 November 2013 will be the world’s largest and most powerful icebreaker.
General characteristics of the vessels: capacity - 60 MW, operational speed - 22 knots (clean water), length - 173.3 m (160 m, DWL), beam - 34 m (33 m, DWL), depth - 15.2 m; draft (DWL) - 10.5 m; minimum draft - 8.55 m, maximum icebreaking capability - 2.8-meter-thick ice (at full capacity and speed of 1.5-2 knots); full displacement – 33,540 tonnes; designated service life - 40 years, crew - 75.
