Major ASW ship of Northern Fleet Severomorsk has started its counter-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden, says press center of RF Defence Ministry.
At present the Russian ships is escorting the Indian bulk cargo ship Visha Niohi sailing from the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea.
Earlier, the major ASW ship Severomorsk had been involved in ensuring safety of civil navigation in the Gulf of Aden several times. The Northern Fleet's ship escorted convoys of vessels in piracy-prone areas in 2013 and 2015. In 2017, the Russian major ASW ship participated in the AMAN 2017 international naval anti-piracy exercise, which took place in the waters of the Arabian Sea and at the coastal base of the Pakistan Navy, and in 2018 in Russian-Japanese naval exercises in the Indian Ocean .
In the Indian Ocean, the ship of the Northern Fleet has operated since the second half of September.
The long-distance cruise of the major ASW ship Severomorsk started on July 5, 2018. To date, the ship has passed more than 24,000 nautical miles, completed a number of military-diplomatic missions, and visited ports of Algiers, Victoria, Pemba, Antsiranana and Djibouti.
