The World Maritime University (WMU), established within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Maritime Academy (IMA) of Lebanon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding their mutual interests in marine and maritime education and training, maritime safety, security and marine environmental management, WMU says in a press release.
Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, WMU President, referred to the signing of the MoU stating: “This is the first MOU with a maritime academic institution in Lebanon. It is hoped that we can support the development of maritime education and training as well as capacity building and partnership in the country in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and in particular Goals 4 and 17, which are fundamental to achieving the UN SDGs.”
Mr. Pierre Akl, President and Chairman of IMA stated, “We are deeply honored and overwhelmed to receive the support of World Maritime University (WMU), and the honorable Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry. All of us at IMA, consider this cooperation as a pivotal point in the history of our Academy, and the future of Maritime in Lebanon overall.”
Areas of agreement within the MoU include review by WMU of IMA’s curricula, participation of IMA faculty in WMU degree programmes, the possibility of WMU offering professional development courses at IMA and possibilities for collaboration in areas of common interest.
