On January 7th, the "BYD HEFEI," the first 7,000-car liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel powered vehicle carrier (PCTC) ordered by BYD Co., Ltd., embarked on its maiden voyage, according to China State Shipbuilding Corporation's release.
Built by Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, this vessel represents an "upgraded 2.0" version of the shipyard's existing car carrier series, incorporating advanced green technologies.
Equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system, permanent magnet shaft generator, and energy-saving features such as drag reduction and antifouling paint, the "BYD HEFEI" is designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30%. This aligns with the increasing demand for environmentally friendly and efficient shipping solutions.
This project marks a significant milestone for BYD, as it is the first time the company has directly ordered new ships as an end user.
Guangzhou Shipbuilding International will construct a total of two such vessels for BYD. The successful delivery of this vessel ahead of schedule underscores Guangzhou Shipyard International's expertise in building car carriers. With nearly 40 orders for car carriers already completed, the shipyard maintains its position as a global leader in this market segment.
