BYD has achieved another milestone with the launch of the "BYD Shenzhen," the world's largest vehicle carrier, capable of transporting up to 9,200 cars. This vessel, named after the company's hometown, recently undocked from Yangzhou port, located northwest of Shanghai.
Measuring 219 meters in length and 37.7 meters in width, the "BYD Shenzhen" boasts a maximum speed of 18.5 knots (34.3 km/h) and a draft of 9 meters.
This significant addition to BYD's fleet aligns with the company's global expansion strategy, with plans to increase its car carrier fleet to eight vessels by early 2026.
The "BYD Shenzhen" is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. It utilizes LNG dual-fuel technology, allowing it to operate on both LNG and traditional marine fuel. Furthermore, it is equipped with energy-saving devices and incorporates BYD box stationary storage batteries, likely used to power the ship during docking or in low-emission zones, further reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
This launch follows the successful deployment of previous carriers, including the "BYD Explorer," "BYD Changzhou," and recently, the "BYD Hefei," which has a capacity of 7,000 cars.
In 2024, BYD exported 417,204 EVs, a 71.9% increase compared to the previous year. This represents approximately 10% of BYD's total global passenger vehicle sales, which reached 4.25 million units in 2024. Expanding its global presence, BYD launched the Atto 3 in the South Korean market on January 17. The company plans to further strengthen its presence in the South Korean market with the upcoming launches of the Seal sedan and Sealion 07 SUV later this year.
