Samsung Heavy Industries secures first LNG carrier order of the year

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has secured its first order of the year, announcing on Jan. 20 that it has signed a contract with a shipowner in the Oceania region for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier worth 379.6 billion won, according to Businesskorea.

The vessel is scheduled to be delivered by June 30, 2027. This new order increases SHI's order backlog for LNG carriers to 84 vessels, with a total value of $19.1 billion.

A company official stated, "This year, we plan to continue securing orders focusing on eco-friendly vessels such as LNG carriers and ammonia carriers, as well as high-value offshore projects." Samsung Heavy Industries, a subsidiary of the Samsung Group, specializes in constructing large vessels, including oil tankers, container ships, and LNG carriers, as well as offshore platforms and facilities.

The demand for LNG carriers has been growing due to the increasing global demand for natural gas, which is considered a cleaner alternative to other fossil fuels like coal and oil.
