Russia-based NEB - Tug service enters international market of marine towing

From May 1, two sea-going tug boats of NEB - Tug service start marine towing at the ports of the Baltic and North Seas. These are the first Russian tug boats in the North-West region to raise the register class to be deployed outside territorial waters. The Company’s vessels will be engaged in transportation of barge-and-tug boat trains.

NEB - Tug service LLC, the leader of towing operations in the ports of Russia’s North-West region, has changed the register class for tug boats Merkuri and Uran. For that purpose the Company invested about RUR 4.5 million into equipment modernization. The works were executed by ship repair company TechnoBaltServis (St. Petersburg). By 2010, NEB - Tug service intends to put into operation two more sea-going tug boats.

“That will enable us to take one of the leading positions at the market of marine towing in the Baltic Sea,” Evgeni Savkin, Director General of NEB - Tug service says. “I think we will be able to cover about 70% of the demand for such operations in Russian ports of the North-West region”.

The tug boats Merkuri and Uran (built in 1990) may vary the capacity of their engines within the range of 1.2 thou h.p. to 2.5 thou h.p. It enable efficient consumption of bunker fuel when working in the open sea and maneuvering in the port’s harbor waters.
