Hainan province, which has the mainland's largest special economic zone, will set up a bonded port area in Yangpu that will help open the rest of province, said Wei Liucheng, secretary of Chinese People's Congress Hainan provincial committee.
Mr Wei said Hainan should make good use of its location and port resources of Yangpu and boost the construction of the bonded port area to make it a regional logistics and shipping centre as well as an industrial base.
Yangpu port and Yangpu Economic Development Zone will play a very important role in the economic development of Hainan and they are the "special zones" within the special economic zone of Hainan, he said.
The official said an administrative committee will be set up to supervise the construction of Yangpu Economic Development Zone, Yangpu Port and the neighbouring areas.
The Administration Bureau of Yangpu Economic Development Zone estimated that the throughput of Yangpu Port will reach 48 million tons by the year 2010.
