Throughput of the port of Caucasus up 7.2% in Jan.-Apr. 07, y-o-y

In January-April 2007, the port of Caucasus handled 1783.22 thou tons of cargo (+7.19%, year-on-year), PortNews IAA learnt from Taman branch of Rosmorport FSUE. In the four-month period the port transshipped 1291.66 thou tons of export cargo (+81.8%, year-on-year). Transshipment of import cargo grew by 12.2% to 348.90 thou tons. In January-April the port handled 45.16 thou tons of fertilizers and 410.13 thou tons of general cargo. Off-harbor transshipment decreased 4.5 times to 142.66 thou tons. Over the reported period the port handled 658 vessels (+16.25%, year-on-year).

The port of Caucasus is situated at the border of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov at Kerch Strait from the side of Russia. The port of Caucasus is ice-free, so it has the ability to handle both river vessels (draft of up to 5 meters) and sea vessels (off-harbor handling of vessels with a draft of up to 11 meters). Piloting is obligatory for vessels calling in the port of Caucasus. The territory of the port is crossed by a 2600-meter long railway line. The port handles mainly loose cargo, general cargo and timber.
