Russian crew end hunger strike in Japan, fly home

The crew of the Russian ship Sapfirovy, who announced a hunger strike in the Japanese port of Isikari demanding wage arrears, have been paid in full and flew home to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, the office of Kamchatka regional prosecutor told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

The seamen demanded two-month wage arrears. Prosecutors determined the vessel with the home port of call in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is owned by the local MAS-Company. Since January 1 it has been chartered by a South Korean firm.

Prosecutors said the owner of the ship had violated no laws, as the charterer had to cover all maintenance costs, including the wages of the crew.

“It is impossible to bring officials of the Korean company to responsibility, as they are on the Korean territory,” the office said.

A replacement crew has been sent to the Sapfirovy.
