Sonadia, Kutubdia channels (Bangladesh) selected for deep seaport

The government will establish a deep seaport at the cost of Tk 42,000 crore, Communications Adviser Major General (retd) MA Matin told journalists yesterday.
Sonadia and Kutubdia channels have been selected as the first and second suitable sites respectively for setting up the deep seaport in the country.
The 11 kilometres long port will have 58 jetties, the Adviser said adding that the deep-sea port would be constructed in three phases by 2055.
He said this after a review meeting of an inter-ministerial committee on the phase-1 report of the techno-economic feasibility study and the site selection for setting up the deep seaport.
Pacific Consultants International (PCI), a Japanese consulting firm, recently submitted a feasibility report on the deep seaport after a study.
The firm signed an agreement with the Bangladesh government on July 12, 2006.
As per the agreement, the consultation firm was supposed to submit a report on the techno-economic feasibility study and the site selection within a year as per the terms of reference.
Chaired by Communications and Shipping Adviser Major General MA Matin, the meeting was attended, among others, by Cabinet Secretary Ali Imam Majumder, ERD Secretary M Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, Planning Secretary Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury, Shipping Secretary Sheikh Enayetullah, Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission Faruq Ahmed Siddiqui, Additional Secretary of Finance Department ATM Fazlul Karim, Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority M Moslehudin and Chairman of Mongla Port Authority Ashraf Mohammad Iqbal.
While presenting the phase-1 report of the site selection, experts said six, out of nine, sites had been primarily selected for the deep seaport, where surveys were conducted on 17 categories, including land and land nature, depth of water, earthquake and tidal surge, dredging and maintenance, security facilities and environment.
The Adviser said a technical committee would submit its evaluation report on the phase-1 report of the site selection within 15 days and then it would be placed before the cabinet committee.
On completion of the feasibility study, the deep seaport will be constructed by 2055 in three phases, involving Tk 42,000 crore, which contains 58 jetties over 11 km.
