Experts anticipate that nearby Malaysian ports, Tanjung Pelapas (PTP) and Northport in Port Klang, will benefit from the overflow. Major shipping lines, including Maersk, have been adding new service strings to Malaysian ports as the demand for transshipment services in the region grows.
The average number of ships calling at Singapore has risen to 10,500 a month, with containership arrivals accounting for 1,600 of the total.
But ships are said to be waiting longer to berth, which raises the spectre of delays and threatens schedules, reports the Business Times of Malaysia.
Aggravating the problem, is the arrival of larger ships which occupy more quay space with mega container ships of 8,500 TEU requiring 350 metre long berths.
Malaysia's PTP reported throughput of 4.8 million TEU in 2006 and a capacity of eight million TEU, while Northport throughput was 2.3 million TEU with a capacity of 4.2 million TEU.
