Orient Express Line (India) chooses Tanjung Pelepas

India's Orient Express Line (OEL) has decided to relocate 60% of its cargo through Johor's Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) for transshipment, news reports said.
OEL, one India's largest ship operators, moves cargo from ports in India, the Middle East and South East Asia to shipping hubs such as Singapore for re-shipment to Europe and the US.
OEL handled an estimated 200,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) last year.
The relocation is the first such move by a shipper since Maersk and Evergreen pulled out some of their calls from Singapore in 2000.
“We will be calling on PTP first before going to Singapore and Port Klang, and we expect PTP to take 60% of our cargo,” OEL Singapore managing director Mahesh S Iyer told Bernama.
According to industry sources, PTP was chosen to allow greater speed of arrival for cargo from India slated to be transshipped to ports in the US and Europe via shipping lines such as Maersk and Evergreen.
