Kerala's Minister for Ports M Vijayakumar said the state authorities expected to spend up to $734,000 on initial construction, including essential infrastructure development. He said the intention was to retain Alappuzha’s heritage while reviving the harbour's commercial value. The upcoming tender will be based on a technical report from L&T Rampol.
Alappuzha port has seen activity decline since the mid 1950s, with maritime activities shifting to Kochi, which is also in Kerala.
DP World recently announced plans to build a $450 million container terminal in Kochi.
Kerala state government has also been in discussions to find operators for the $1 billion Vizhinjam deep water port project. Observers say the moves show India's determination to upgrade and develop new port facilities in response to Asia’s economic growth.
