Braemar Seascope's good year

UK shipping services provider Braemar Seascope Group made adjusted pre-tax profits of £11.0m (US$21.8m) for the year to 28 February, up from £10.3m the year before..
Commenting on the results and outlook, company chairman Sir Graham Hearne, said: “The Group is performing well and has posted results reflecting another good year.” “Shipping has experienced large and rapid changes in freight rates and vessel values over the course of the last five years. This volatility is likely to remain while the demand for seaborne trade continues to grow and we expect our broadly-based shipping services business to benefit while these conditions persist. “
TREATING safety as an objective and not as a constraint imposed by existing design ruleswas the dominant theme of last week's conference in Brussels on the EU funded research project SAFEDOR (Design, Operation and Regulation for Safety).
At its mid-term conference taking place in Brussels this week, project results related to risk-based ship design and approval were presented by some of the 53 project partners. Participants in SAFEDOR come from all sectors of the maritime industry are presently working on and promoting the new approach to increase shipping safety through innovation.
In his welcome note, Joost de Bock, responsible project officer of the European Commission, welcomed the industry-driven approach of SAFEDOR. "The project does not create new limits", he said. "The idea is to create the right conditions for new developments and innovation."
Dr Heike Hoppe, Senior Technical Officer at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), confirmed that there exists a general trend towards risk-based approaches. "I expect SAFEDOR to play an important role in establishing the modernised regulatory framework we need", she commented. To what extent SAFEDOR actually supports IMO efforts to develop Goal-based Standards (GBS), was a matter of debate throughout the conference.
