Throughput of the port of St. Petersburg up 15% in Jan.-Apr. 07, y-o-y

In January-April 2007, throughput of the port of St. Petersburg grew by 15%, year-on-year, to 17,527.2 thou tons, Administration of St. Petersburg Seaport reports. Over the reported period, transshipment of bulk cargo totaled 2,695.9 thou tons (+65%, year-on-year) including 257.7 thou tons of ore (+31%), 1,665.4 thou tons of mineral fertilizers (+31%), 772.8 thou tons of coal and coke (4.8-fold growth against January-April 2006).  In the four-month period the port handled 183.1 thou tons of loose cargo (grain) (+22%), 906.6 thou tons of timber (-17%), 4,601.6 of general cargo (-8%), 763.8  thou tons of non-ferrous metal (+4%), 131.9  thou tons of metal scrap (+34%), 1,304.2 thou tons of packaged goods (+14%). 598.3 thou tons of refrigerated cargo (+25%), 5,386.9 thou tons of other general cargo (+19%). Transshipment of containers grew by 29.5% to 532,235 thou tons (3,753.1 teus). Transshipment of oil amounted to 3,752.0 thou tons (+8%), oil - 1.1 thou tons (17.6 times less compared to that of January-April of 2006. thou tons (+5%). Over the reported period the port handled 4.732 vessels.

Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.

In 2005 the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 4282.2 thou tons. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
