Japanese trawler captain fined over $19,000 for poaching

A court in Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky fined the captain of a Japanese trawler, who was found guilty of poaching in mid-March, over $19,000 Tuesday, a prosecutor in Russia's Far Eastern region of Kamchatka said according to RIA Novosti. In early November 2006, the Tomi Maru 53 trawler was detained off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula with illegal catch - pollock, halibut, skate, cod - along with two other Japanese fishing vessels, Yokei Maru 5 and Gyokuryu Maru, which belong to Kanai Gyogyo, a company based in Japan's Hokkaido.

A court in Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky fined Kanai Gyogyo 2.9 million rubles ($112,360) last December. The Tomi Maru 53 trawler was confiscated, while the captains of the other two vessels were fined 250,000 rubles (almost $9,700) and over 1.1 million rubles ($42,619), respectively.
