Athens aims to become regional cargo hub

The introduction of new long-haul passenger routes between Athens and the US has provided much needed bellyhold capacity.
From May 26th, US Airways will operate daily B767 flights via Philadelphia, and in June, Continental Airlines will deploy a B762 aircraft on a daily service to and from New York, Newark.
Due to the relatively easy access to the growing Balkan markets, Athens is also the transhipment point for charter flights from China, with landed cargo being trucked onward to various neighbouring countries.
Alexis Sioris, head of cargo development at Athens, commented that air airport is also negotiating for some new regular charters to serve the Balkan markets.
