This figure comprises 31.31 million TEUs from coastal ports and 2.36 million TEUs from inland river ports, up 24 percent and 28.6 per cent, respectively.
Last year the mainland handled 93 million TEUs, but if the current growth continues, the country’s booming exports will see the total reaching close on 120 million.
This is good news for port operators that are expanding capacity rapidly. In South China, the number of berths will double to 65 by 2010 with utilisation expected to drop to 67 percent.
Citigroup’s head of regional transport research Charles de Trenck predicts the Bohai Rim port utilisation level will drop to 50 percent by 2010 with Shanghai and Ningbo being the region with the best capacity-utilisation balance.
