"We are grateful to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bay area congressional delegation, and other leaders who worked to help California ports receive security funding," said the president of the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners, Anthony Batarse.
The Port of Oakland is the fourth busiest container port in the US, moving $33 billion of goods a year. The grant, part of the Infrastructure Protection Programme, will support a wireless backbone network and a perimeter intrusion detection system upgrade.
The port requested federal funding for 75 per cent of the cost of each project and the port plans to finance the remaining 25 per cent cost of the projects. The port's total share of the cost of the two projects is approximately $1.9 million. The total cost of the two projects is $7.5 million.
