When the new terminal is fully operational, activity at the port's Tivoli terminal will cease.
“We will relocate all of our container business from Tivoli as soon as Ringaskiddy is operational,” said port of Cork's chief executive Brendan Keating.
The container terminal in Tivoli, one of the largest container facilities in Ireland, currently handles 185,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.
The first stage of the Ringaskiddy terminal will boast handling capacity of 400,000 TEUs per year; when fully operational, the teminal's capacity will be 600,000 TEUs.
Thr proposal is that Ringaskiddy terminal will handle all container throughput at Cork and provide additional handling capacity for future demands, said Keating.
Business advisors A&L Goodbody has been commissioned to secure private sector investments to fund the project.
“We are preparing a financial feasibility study and once that is done we will have a better idea of when the new terminal will be open,” said Keating to the Irish Examiner.
