The new bid came from a coalition of three companies including Codelfa, owned by the diversified Italian transport and construction group Gavio. The others are Itinera and Reggio Emilia project manager Coopsette.
Maersk, together with its partners Grandi Lavori Fincosit and Technital, was the lone initial bidder on the terminal when the Savona port authority sought expressions of interest last year.
The port authority will now examine both proposals, and said in a statement that it would “move towards a definitive decision as soon as possible in the interests of the development of the port and the competitiveness of the region.”
The project for a new terminal at Savona-Vado foresees the construction of 700 m of berth with depths up to 20 m, backed by 25 hectares of yard space.
The facility will be capable of accommodating vessels with a capacity in excess of 10,000 teu.
It will be capable of handing around 600,000 teu annually, boosting the port’soverall container handling capacity to around 850,000 teu.
