The ship, with a capacity of about 4,500 standard 20-foot boxes, will be delivered in 2009, Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas said in a statement to the city's stock exchange on Monday night.
AP Moeller-Maersk A/S, Orient Overseas and other shipping lines have ordered ships to expand their fleets as rising global trade pushes up demand for sea cargo. About 90 per cent of world trade moves by sea.
Orient Overseas, controlled by the family of former Hong Kong leader Tung Chee-hwa, is arranging bank financing to fund about 80 per cent of the purchase price of the vessel, it said.
The company also placed a US$477 million order for four vessels from Samsung Heavy, the world's second-biggest shipyard, last October. These ships, each able to carry 8,063 standard 20-foot containers, will be delivered between 2009 and 2010.
