Port of Rotterdam signs MOU with Malaysia's Mihap Holdings

The port of Rotterdam has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malaysia's Mihap Holdings to develop a trading and logistics system that is halal throughout the supply chain for shipments between Malaysia and Rotterdam.
The MOU aims to develop a system which promises the 'halal integrity' of the organization of the logistics chain, from transportation, warehousing, storage, cold rooms, containerisation to packaging activities.
Rotterdam port officials have pointed to the 30 million consumers who make up Europe's Muslim market as the reason for the agreement.
Both parties involved in the MOU will jointly develop standard operating procedures and initiate pilot projects on halal shipments between Malaysia and the Netherlands.
Under the terms of the MOU, both parties are seeking to establish a new liner service between Malaysia and Rotterdam, also operating on halal principles.
According to Rotterdam port officials smaller vessels that carry around 3,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) may be used initially, and in the event of sufficient cargo the liner service may consider a direct route of Jakarta-Malaysia-Rotterdam instead of the current Jakarta-Singapore-Rotterdam run.
Rotterdam initiated its halal programme two years ago, and has already secured halal consortium partners like Hecny Transportation, Hokomega Transportama, VAT Logistics and Eurofigo.
