The strong performance made Savannah the second busiest container handling facility on the US East Coast and fourth in the nation.
Savannah handled 2.33 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the fiscal year 2006-2007, a 14.5% jump year-on-year.
In terms of total cargo volumes handled, Savannah handled a record 1.24 million tonnes which is a 10% jump year-on-year.
Savannah now has the fastest growing container facility in the United States and plans are moving ahead to triple handling capacity, GPA officials said.
“Our 10-year strategic plan was developed in part to address the record growth of international trade in Georgia,” said GPA board chairman Stephen S Green.
“As we continue to move forward with our $1.2 billion capital investment program at Georgia's ports, the results of those investments are already beginning to be felt throughout the region,” added Green.
