Throughput of Vancouver up 4.5 per cent in H1 07, y-o-y

Shipments through the Port of Vancouver reached new heights in the first half of 2007, with June's volume of 7.8 million tonnes the highest for any one-month period.
Overall tonnage was up 4.5 per cent to a record 39.9 million tones in the first six months of the year, compared to the same period last year with potash -- up almost 137 per cent -- and lumber -- up 25 per cent -- leading the way.
After several years of declining numbers, cruise passengers were up 25 per cent, thanks to the addition of Celebrity's Mercury to the list of ships home porting in Vancouver.
Container traffic increased by five per cent in part due to a shift from breakbulk to containers, and coal continued to be the port's top commodity by volume.
