First container train arrives in Moscow from Riga (Latvia)

This morning first block train № 1231/1232 arrived to Moscow from Riga, RZD-Partner reports. According to Leonid Aver, spokesman of OAO TransContainer, there were no off-scheduled delays during the train course. Containers which arrived to Moscow today were loaded with consumer goods which had been transported to the port of Riga from China by sea transport.

The train, organized by OAO TransContainer and Latvian Railways, was launched due to the growing demand for transit cargo transportation via the ports of the Baltic states, Saint-Petersburg port overloading and operation instability of motor transport companies. Tariff was estimated to be competitiveу with the prices for the motor transport service which is the main transport mode providing cargo transportation on this route.

It is supposed that the train will run between Moscow and Riga weekly. According to the Latvian representative office of OAO TransContainer, now there are cargoes in the port of Riga, which are enough for three runs of the new train. According to the company’s press service, many cargo owners which want to use the new service, connected with the Riga representative office after the train’s start. Now the company plans to send 3 thousand TEU on this route before the end of 2007.
