Containerships launches new container train between Liepaja (Latvia) and Moscow

Containerships Group of Companies launches new container train between Liepaja (Latvia) and Moscow. It will carry 45-feet (22 tonnes) containers. It is supposed the travel time of the weekly service is to make two days, Containerships reports according to RZD-Partner. The first train will leave Liepaja September 22 and will arrive in Moscow September in 48 hours. According to Sigurjon Markusson, managing director of Containerships, transportation of so-called "high cube" containers (45-feet containers) will distinct this service from other ones as such container are usually transported by road transport.

The project is supported by both Latvian and Russian Transport Ministries. It is to be operated by national railway operators - Latvijas Dzelzscels (Latvian Railway) and TransContainer. “It is not just an ecological solution of a border traffic jams problem. Both countries are to get profit from on-ld transportation of cargo, which earlier required considerable investments into motor roads and border crossings”.

The company also plans to raise the service’s frequency to four times a week by the end of 2008. The train is to carry cargo delivered to Liepaja from Tisport, Tilbery, Helsinki, Rotterdam and Hamburg. “This service is a reliable route to the very heart of Russia’s fast-growing economy,” Markusson said.
