Ports of Rotterdam and New York fighting pollution

The port authorities of the New York/New Jersey and of Rotterdam are going to co-operate in the fight against the emission of greenhouse gases and for better air quality. Yesterday, COO Pieter Struijs (maritime affairs and infrastructure) signed a co-operation agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in New York. The co-operation will mostly take the form of the exchange of information and experiences.
"With this step, we want to signal that the port of Rotterdam is serious about tackling the issues surrounding air pollution and climate change, and that together we develop the most effective approach to these problems and implement it in our ports,'' says Struijs in his commentary on the co-operation agreement.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is one of the founders of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, which aims to reduce Rotterdam’s CO2 emissions in 2050 by 50% in relation to 1990. At a congress next year in Rotterdam, the mayors of twelve world port cities, supported by the Clinton Climate Initiative, will make agreements about measures to be taken by the ports that will ensure a better climate.
