RosMorPort FSUE to transship 50,000-60,000 cars via Baltijsk terminal in 2008

In 2008, RosMorPort FSUE plans to transship 50,000-60,000 cars via Baltijsk terminal, the construction of which started in 2007, PortNews IAA learnt from the organization. The first batch of foreign cars has been recently delivered to the terminal and then loaded to wagons owned by Apparel LLC and then sent to Kazakhstan.

The terminal was built within the framework of a transport-and-logistics project  SeaAutoHighway, developed jointly by the operator of Baltijsk ferry terminal in Kaliningrad region, Kaliningrad branch of RosMorPort FSUE, Danish ferry operator AB "DFDS LISCO", ferry port Zasnits and railway operator Apparel LLC. The project envisions the complete range of service related to transportation of foreign cars from the port of Zasnits (Germany) to Baltijsk and then to Russia and CIS by railway transport.

Analysts forecast, in 2007, import of new cars to Russia will grow by 20-30%, year-on-year, to 1.2 million units. By 2011 Russian car market will be the largest one on Europe. Annual demand for cars will make some 3 million. Today, there are not enough port facilities for automobiles in the Baltic region which forces the suppliers and carriers join their efforts in search for new logistics decisions on delivery of cars to the market of Russia.
