Commercial seaport of Ventspils completes terminal modernization for EUR 2.6 million

Stevedoring company of commercial seaport of Ventspils Ventspils tirdzniecibas osta (VTO) has completed the modernization of its terminal. According to Gudok.Ru referring to Interfax, the modernization cost LVL 1.85 million (over EUR 2.6 million). The company purchased new equipment based on up-to-date handling technologies and logistics.

VTO purchased 18-m3 radio-guided grapples making it possible to raise the efficiency of loose dry cargo handling and to decrease environment emission. It also acquired large capacity bucket loaders. Besides, the company introduced new system of electronic accounting and control of wagons enabling prompt control of cargo transportation.

This year the company signed contracts with LDz Cargo, subsidiary of Latvijas dzelzcels (LDz, Latvian Railway) which will make it possible to provide cargo owners with wider range of logistics services.

In 2008, VTO plans to raise cargo handling by 8% - to 4.9 million tonnes. As it was reported earlier, VTO is implementing a large scale project on construction of Baltic coal terminal, the largest specialized coal terminal in Latvia. It is to be put into operation 2008. The incorporators of Baltic coal terminal are Ventspils tirdzniecibas osta and Indtec baltic coal, a subsidiary of Dutch Indtec Finance B.V., owning Russia coal mine Zarechnaya in Kuzbass. One euro is equal to LTL 0.7028.
