Hamburg city pushes TUI, Oetker to launch merger talks for shipping ops

The City of Hamburg is pushing for talks between TUI AG and German investor family Oetker to avert a possible sale of TUI's Hapag-Lloyd shipping giant into foreign hands, Die Welt reported, without saying where it got the information.
Such talks could result in a merger of Hapag-Lloyd and Oetker's German shipbuilder Hamburg-Sued, the newspaper said.
According to media reports, Norwegian shipowner John Frederiksen, who holds about 5 pct of shares in TUI, and an unspecified number of allies are calling for a spin-off of Hapag-Lloyd. TUI's supervisory will discuss the matter in a meeting on March 17.
Separate reports said merger talks between Singapore container shipping line Neptune Orient Lines Ltd (NOL) and TUI have stalled over disagreement about who would run the merged company and opposition from TUI shareholders.
