In January-February, 2008, commercial seaport of Mariupol (Ukraine) handled 1.268 million tonnes of cargo (-51.6%, year-on-year), Interfax-Ukraine reports according to Gudok.Ru. In the reported period, transshipment of metal fell by 60.2% - to 516,400 tonnes, coal – by 51.4% to 302,100 tonnes, clay – by 55.1% to 177,900 tonnes, grain – by 39.7% to 17,300 tonnes.
Commercial seaport of Mariupol is one of three largest ports of Ukraine. The port’s berths are capable of handling vessels with length of up to 240 meters and draft of up to 8 meters. The port handles ferrous and non-ferrous metal, cast iron, ore, coal, coke, clay fertilizers, sulfur, equipment (including large size and heavy equipment), heavy fuel oil (ship-to-ship), grain, containers and packaged cargo. In 2007, the port handled 17.4 million tonnes of cargo (+9.9%, year-on-year).
