The port handled 529,699 20-foot containers last month, a 2.1 percent decline.
The number of loaded import containers dropped more than 7 percent, which experts say is largely a result of the struggling U.S. economy.
But the port’s numbers were buoyed by a whopping 36 percent jump in exports, to 147,275 units. The declining value of the dollar has made U.S. goods more affordable in the international marketplace, providing a boost for exporters.
