Kuehne + Nagel posts 2007 profit rise of 15pc to US$515 million

Kuehne + Nagel International AG has announced that net earnings rose by 15.9 per cent in 2007 to CHF531 million (US$515.32), mostly through organic growth.
Turnover increased by 15.3 per cent to CHF20.97 billion, with acquisitions accounting for CHF80 million and currency effects for CHF 404 million. Operational result (EBITDA) improved by 18.3 per cent to CHF1.01 billion.
"Our comprehensive service portfolio attracted attention worldwide and generated sustained growth and remarkable results in 2007," said CEO Klaus Herms."In sea and airfreight we achieved profitable growth above the market average. Contract logistics has become the company's third pillar and increased margins as well as significantly raising volumes," he said.
Seafreight volumes increased by 15 per cent to handle more than 2.6 million TEU. Despite investments in infrastructure, sales and IT, the operational result improved by 13.7 per cent.
Airfreight rose by 14 per cent, with productivity increases and cost efficiency leading to a 31.6 per cent increase. The EBITDA margin grew from 4.9 to a record 5.9 per cent.
Contract logistics produced turnover growth of 19.1 per cent due to winning new business and extending existing contracts with major international companies to other countries.
Road and rail logistics recorded turnover growth of 14 per cent, owing to the successful integration of the companies acquired prior to 2007 and the launch of the European hub network. The result was 11.1 per cent below the previous year's because of investments to expand the network and standardise IT systems.
