According to shipbuilding market researcher Clarkson Research Services on Sunday, Korean shipbuilders won contracts to build vessels totaling 14 million deadweight tons, which is 66.4 percent of the total 21.1 million DWT in global orders.
Deadweight, or DWT for deadweight tons, is a measure of how much a ship can carry, including the crew, passengers, cargo, fuel, water, and stores.
China took second place with orders of 5.5 million DWT, followed by Japan with 1.1 DWT, Taiwan with 400,000 DWT and Europe with 100,000 DWT.
An industry insider said that the global shipbuilding market is flat compared to last year, but Korean shipbuilders continue to win orders for high value-added ships and maintain their reputation as the industry leaders.
