The German government believes a sale of the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company would weaken Germany as a place for investment in the maritime sector, the government coordinator for maritime affairs Dagmar Woehrl told Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper. She said the government is prioritising securing jobs in the shipping industry. Woehrl welcomed the moves of some Hamburg-based investors to make sure that Hapag-Lloyd will
continue as an independent shipping company based in Hamburg.
TUI AG said its supervisory board has decided to split Hapag-Lloyd from the rest of the company. TUI said it will examine all options for Hapag-Lloyd, including a spin-off, merger or sale to an investor.
