Deutsche Bahn gains majority stake in Spain's Transfesa

The EU Commission has granted permission for Deutsche Bahn AG to take over the majority shares in Spanish company Transportes Ferroviarios Especiales (Transfesa), a transport and logistics company.
DB AG had purchased the shares in Transfesa back in July last year, but the transaction has been pending regulatory approval.
"This stakeholding will strengthen our strategic activities in the sales regions of western Europe and in particular the Iberian peninsula," said Norbert Bensel, the management board member responsible for transport and logistics at DB AG. "Our customers can expect to benefit primarily from the expansion of our efficient Europe-wide network for the automobile sector."
In autumn 2007, DB also took over English Welsh and Scottish Railway Ltd (EWS). "The integration of EWS and Transfesa is intended to lead to a noticeable increase in the market share of rail in Europe over the medium term, as well as an improvement in product quality," a company statement said.
Transfesa is an internationally active transport and logistics company specialising in rail and road transport in the automotive, bulk goods and general cargo segments. Further shares in the company, which has its registered office in Madrid, are held by the Spanish railway undertaking Renfe and the French SNCF. In 2007, the company generated revenues of EUR300 million (US$463 million) and employed 1,150.
