Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust's board clears fourth container terminal project

The board of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust's (JNPT) has given the go-ahead for building a US$2 billion container terminal that will help it to double its capacity from four million TEUs to eight million TEUs.
The fourth container terminal project now goes to the central government for approval. Once it is approved, JNPT will invite bids for the project. The entire process is expected to take three to four months.
About two years ago, the port had called for expression of interest from interested parties for the fourth container terminal project. There was an overwhelming response with around 41 companies expressing interest, including Reliance Logistics, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Essar Construction, Larsen and Toubro and Hindustan Infrastructure Projects and Engineering.
The project was initially envisaged to cost $1 billion but in the last two years it has increased to $2 billion.
