The fourth container terminal project now goes to the central government for approval. Once it is approved, JNPT will invite bids for the project. The entire process is expected to take three to four months.
About two years ago, the port had called for expression of interest from interested parties for the fourth container terminal project. There was an overwhelming response with around 41 companies expressing interest, including Reliance Logistics, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Essar Construction, Larsen and Toubro and Hindustan Infrastructure Projects and Engineering.
The project was initially envisaged to cost $1 billion but in the last two years it has increased to $2 billion.
