Japan transport firms eye emerging markets

Japanese transport companies are enhancing services in emerging countries as demand for transpacific cargo shipments from Asia plunges in the wake of the US economic slowdown.
Nippon Express, Sagawa Express and Sankyu have been working to begin regular truck transport services along the east-west road stretching between Thailand and Vietnam.
In Russia, Kintetsu World Express has begun transporting consumer electronics and autoparts via the Trans-Siberia Railway. The firm plans to move finished cars by rail in the near future.
After focusing on building a network to distribute autoparts and other products in China, Nippon Yusen plans to turn its attention to other emerging economies. For the three years starting in fiscal 2008, the firm aims to spend US$121 million outside China of the planned $151.27 million investment it has earmarked for land transport operations in emerging markets.
