The restrictions have been imposed on trucks carrying more than 30 tonnes to lengthen the lives of weak bridges, such as Tan Thuan 1 and Rach Chiec.
At Lotus Port in District 7, queues of overloaded trucks have been at a standstill for more than a week. All of them have to pay fees of between US$125-US$250 to get their licences back.
"Last month, we received 40 ships with more than 100,000 tonnes of equipment and machines for the nation's key construction projects. This month, because of the strict attitude towards trucks, we only received half of this," said Duong Khang, head of the port's business division.
"A large amount of cargo has been stockpiled, so we can't handle any more ships. On top of this, many trucks don't dare cross Tan Thuan bridge to enter the port for fear of being fined," he added.
