Malaysia's Bintulu launches US$63 million plan to near double box volume

Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) says it will spend MYR200 million (US$63.1 million) to expand the port's container terminal, multipurpose facilities and to buy cargo handling gear, reported the Malaysia Star.
Bintulu chief executive Mior Ahmad Baiti said when completed in 2010, the container terminal will increase annual handling capacity to 650,000 TEU from today's 327,000 TEU.
The CEO said the port container terminal handled 251,800 TEU last year, up by 26.1 per cent from 199,700 TEU in 2006.
"By 2010, we will be handling 500,000 TEU," he told reporters after the company's AGM at Kuching Hilton.
He said the expanded multipurpose terminal would have its annual capacity increased to four million tonnes by 2011, adding that the port has also signed a five-year terminal services agreement last year with four shipping lines - Evergreen, Hubline, Harbour-Link and Johan Shipping.
These agreements support Bintulu Port's vision to become the premier transshipment hub in the Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), said the newspaper. There are 15 shipping lines calling at Bintulu Port, which recorded over 6,000 vessel calls last year.
BPHB chairman Tun Mohd Eusoff Chin said the company posted a pre-tax profit of MYR189.2 million last year and said the group's operating revenue jumped by nearly MYR26 million to MYR417 million.
