The hull of the first Polish built LNG carrier was launched on May 7, 2008, at Gdansk based Stocznia Polnocna SA (Northern Shipyard), member of REMONTOWA Group. The ship was ordered from Remontowa SA in 2006 by Dutch operator, Rotterdam-based Anthony Veder Rederijzaken BV and is being built at REMONTOWA Group's shipyard Stocznia Polnocna SA. The diesel/gas-electric driven, multipurpose gas carrier, of the 1889 type (design) and B 604/1 yard number, to be named Coral Methane, is a unique vessel - one of the first such units worldwide, and the first one built at any European shipyard. The vessel is unusual in being designed to carry a variety of gas cargoes: liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) or ethylene. On completion in 2008 it will go on long term (15 years) charter to Gasnor, carrying gas along the coast of Norway. The ship will also play an important part in an environmentally-friendly system of LNG fuelled ferries to be operated in Norway. Remontowa SA has also won a tender to build some of these double-ended ferries.
The ship will be equipped with two, thermally insulated, cryogenic self-supporting (independent) tanks of 3750 cbm capacity each and is designed mainly for the carriage of LNG at –163 centigrade. Owing to installed two-stage re-liquefaction compressor room, the ship will be also be able to carry ethylene, LPG and most of other kinds of petroleum gases.
The ship will be equipped with two Rolls-Royce Azipull, AZP 120 type, fixed pitch, azimuthing propellers, driven by frequency controlled electric motors. Maneuvering will be enhanced with bow tunnel thruster.
The electrical energy will be produced by two Bergen diesel based generating sets - 4600 kVA each or, in case of using the boil-off gas as fuel - two generators of 2700 kVA each. This ship will be very environmentally-friendly because it will use the LNG as fuel, significantly decreasing the emission of exhaust fumes such as the greenhouse gas CO2.
The ship is being built under the supervision and according to the rules of Bureau Veritas.
