As of today, 80% of all freight in Russia is being handled in Russian ports, while in 1991 Russian ports accounted for only 40%, Aleksandr Davydenko, head of Federal Agency of Marine and River Transport (RosMorRechFlot) told on May 12 at the sixth International Congress of Port Captains held in St. Petersburg. According to Davydenko, cargo turnover in Russia grew by 2.5 times from 1990 till 2007. Experts contribute the growth mainly to the activities of the ports’ captains and efficient state control of port activities. In 2007, Russian ports handled 7 billion tonnes of foreign trade cargo.
