Taiwans Yang Ming Marine expands ship fleet

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., one of Taiwans leading shipping firms, recently received "Wan Ming" vessel, Taiwans largest container ship. With 333.2 meters in length, the vessel has a loading capacity of 8,240 TEUs (twenty foot-equivalent units). Yang Ming commissioned CSBC Corp., Taiwan to build up the "Wan Ming" vessel. Posting NT$2.6 in after-tax earnings last year, Yang Ming scored NT$0.23 in after-tax earnings in the first quarter of this year. The companys board of directors has recently passed a proposal to dole out NT$2 dividend per share this year, half in stock and the other half in cash.
In addition to Yang Ming, other leading shipping firms, including Wan Hai Lines Ltd. and Evergreen Marine Corp. are also expanding ship fleet.
The worlds 20-largest container shipping firm, Wan Hai will receive 19 new vessels this year which were ordered in both 2003 and 2004. In January of this year, the company received a 6,039-TEU ship which has become its largest container ship.
