On May 28, 2008, Baltiysky Zavod OJSC has launched diesel-electric icebreaker Saint Petersburg built for RosMorPort FSUE, the company informs. The vessel’s main task is to transport cargo and provide icebreaking assistance to large-capacity vessels with breadth of up to 50 meters.
The keel of diesel-electric icebreaker Saint Petersburg was laid on January 19, 2006 at Baltiysky Zavod within the framework of the project 21900. The vessel is to work in the Baltic Sea, in particular, for assistance of vessels in the Gulf of Finland including those exporting oil from the port of Ust-Luga and Primorsk.
The Saint Petersburg is a double-deck vessel with an extended tank, two full-revolving steerable propellers 8 MWt each and maneuvering propulsion device in the bow part of the vessel and open deck in the stern part.
The icebreaker is intended for assistance of large 50 m wide vessels and transportation of cargo. Besides icebreaking assistance the Saint Petersburg may carry out towing operations, emergency/rescue operations and emergency aid to ships, recovery of oil and chemicals in open sea as well as diving and search operations.
