The 6,160-TEU vessel joins her sister vessel, the Safmarine Kariba, as the largest ships in the Safmarine-owned fleet. The vessels are nicknamed the 'Safmarine MegaWhites' because of their size and gleaming white hulls, a company statement said.
The Safmarine Komati was built at the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Shipyard in Busan, South Korea.
Owner's representative and Safmarine Asia Region executive, Peter Ehrenreich, said: "Safmarine has experienced ten-fold growth in the Far East region in the last five years and it is therefore an honour to name the vessel in the presence of customers who have partnered us in that phenomenal growth."
Both the Safmarine Komati and her sister vessel are deployed on the Europe-Middle East-India service, known as Safmarine's Prime Express service.
