The death toll from an explosion on board the Yenisei cargo ship that occurred at the Baltiysk ship repair plant on Thursday has risen to five. Two more people have been found dead on board the Yenisei ship being overhauled in Baltiysk in the Kaliningrad region, Senior assistant to Chief of the Investigating Committee of the Kaliningrad region Mariana Andryushina told Tass on Friday.
An explosion followed by a strong fire hit the cargo ship during maintenance overhaul at the ship building plant in Baltiysk on June 5. According to the latest data, five people were killed, three were badly injured in the fire; two of them were hospitalized in serious condition. The whereabouts of the others who were on board, presumably seven- nine people, were not immediately known.
Russian Navy Commander Admiral Vladimir Visotsky arrived in Baltiysk on Friday to supervise an investigation into the causes of an explosion and fire on board a civilian cargo ship Yenisei that broke out at Ship Building Plant 33 on Thursday, Aide to the Russian Navy commander, Captain First Rank Igor Dygalo told Tass. A group of officers of the Navy headquarters are accompanying Admiral Visotsky, Dygalo said.
A commission that includes workers of law enforcement bodies and the Prosecutor’s Office of the Kaliningrad region has been working on the site of the explosion. The explosion occurred during gas welding on board at 2. 43 pm Thursday. Forces of the Baltic fleet and its fire fighting brigades took part in fire extinguishing. 11 had extinguished the fire. 15 PM Thursday.
An investigating department opened a criminal case on charges of violation of safety precaution rules, which entailed human death through carelessness (Article 143, Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code). The Yenisei ship where the explosion went off belongs to the ENEKS company based in St. Petersburg.
